Historical background — not a claim about this model

The cited patent describes a working process before it describes a machine: air compressed until it is hot enough to ignite fuel introduced near the end of the stroke, with combustion paced by the rate of injection rather than by a spark. The efficiency argument rests on the compression ratio, and the compression ratio is what sets the loads the cylinder and its head have to carry.

The sheet shows a single working cylinder with its head and injection arrangement — the part of the engine where the patent’s claims actually live. The remainder of the engine, in the drawing as in the argument, is conventional and is not what was being claimed.
