How clearance is decided

Every record carries one of five clearance values. The value decides what this site is allowed to do with it, and the same object that decides it wrote the explanations below.

Rights status here is what the source states, not a conclusion we have reached.

clear

Clear

The source places the work in the public domain or waives its rights outright, or a human reviewer has verified a statutory rights basis.

We catalogue it, show it in 3D, and may publish rendered stills. No further condition attaches.

clear_with_attribution

Clear, with attribution

The licence permits reuse on the condition that the author and licence are credited.

We catalogue it, show it in 3D, publish stills, and render the author, the licence name, the canonical licence text, a link to the source, and a statement of the changes we made — on the page and in the metadata of every image we export.

clear_with_conditions

Clear, with conditions

The work is generally free of copyright restriction, but a separate body of law attaches — an agency insignia, a protected mark, or a rights basis a machine proposed and no lawyer has confirmed.

We catalogue it and show it in 3D. Software never treats a condition as satisfied on its own: a condition is resolved only by a recorded operator decision, and where that has happened — as with the NASA insignia condition, resolved by the operator record of 2026-08-06 (docs/NASA-INSIGNIA-DECISION.md) — the page names the decision and shows the work as acquired. A row whose condition remains unresolved stays withheld, and nothing under this value is a candidate for sale in either case.

display_only

Display only

A ShareAlike, NonCommercial or NoDerivatives licence. Showing the work as it stands, with its notice, is permitted; producing a modified or commercial derivative is not.

We catalogue it and show it with its notice. We export no still, because a rendered image is a derivative these licences do not grant us.

blocked

Blocked

No licence, an unreadable licence, a licence we do not recognise, or a host whose terms forbid the use. Absence of a positive permission is not permission.

The row stays in the ledger with its reason and gets no page at all. It is counted in nothing on this site.

Operator decision

The NASA insignia condition — resolved

On 2026-08-06 the operator resolved the NASA insignia condition: NASA-derived builds are displayed as acquired, unscrubbed and unedited, under the factual-representation reading.

The full decision record, including its binding conditions, is docs/NASA-INSIGNIA-DECISION.md in the project repository (commit 61aceef).

The insignia appears only within renders and viewer views of the hardware itself; attribution states provenance and nothing more; merchandise remains at zero; monetization of a NASA-derived item voids the resolution for that item.
